CREW: David Bryant David Bryant, born in Portland, Oregon, became involved
in filmmaking while an English Major in college. Finding this new avenue
of expression much more amenable to his "take action now" demeanor, and
influenced strongly by the DIY attitudes of Punk, David began making rather
uncompromising videos for Public Access. Upon finding himself unemployed
for five months in Portland and "unqualified" for unemployment or social
aid during the Reagan era, he borrowed money and moved to New York at
the impetus of the musician Tom Cora. There he found unexpected acceptance
of his quiet drive and determination. Emboldened by this acceptance he
started documenting performances of the "Downtown" music scene, programming
film screenings, and working for an alliance of stock film libraries that
included Prelinger Films, Petrified Films and Bob Summer's Film/Audio
Services. Eventually he ended up working for some of the largest advertising
agencies in the world and freelancing for numerous post houses, editorial
boutiques, and broadcasters in New York City. This experience further
honed his interest in demystifying media technologies and forms of expression
and reinforced his commitment to media activism.
